Overview
The Sham Valley Trek, maybe one of the easiest treks in Ladakh, connects one’s heart and spirit with an unrivaled natural and cultural phenomenon. It peels off the ethnicity of Ladakh rural life, historic monasteries that symbolize the everlasting footsteps of many sects of Buddhism, and untamed streams cutting over the valley into the famous Apricot Valley of Ladakh. On his voyage through the pathways and pace, a vigorous, full-of-life beginner will not face any difficulties.
After a steady descent to Phobe La (3580m) from Likir, the Sham Valley Trek climbs up to Chagatse La, which is at an elevation of 4,500 meters (3630m). One of the main attractions on this walk is the Rizong Monastery, which is roughly an hour’s drive from Yangthang and runs through a small ravine. The journey from Yangthang to HemisShukpachan passes across Tsermangchan La, a pass at a height of 4,500 meters (3850m). One of Ladakh’s attractions is the settlement of a grove of cedars, which is located along this road. Further ahead, several beautiful streams bordered by leafy willows and big barley fields provide a welcome splash of color to the otherwise bleak, stony slopes. Following that, the trail ascends between two hillocks to the west before turning south and climbing steeply to the Mebtak La (3750m), which is dotted with prayer flags. The road to Ang, which is surrounded by apricot orchards, swerves across a gorge after passing through the pass. Finally, the descent to Tingmosgang reveals much of the Indo-Tibetan sects’ local culture.
